Mary Ellen Chase (1887-1973) was born and raised in Blue Hill, Maine. She graduated from the University of Maine and spent thirty years as a leading faculty member at Smith Collage in Massachusetts. She is best remembered as a best-selling author, writing more than thirty books, several that used her cherished Maine setting, authentically capturing the unique spirit and character of the state while contributing important literature to its history.
